Kuntao Jiu-Jitsu:
Realistic Self-Defense and Street Survival
Children’s Program
Children Curriculum vs. Adult Curriculum
In an official Kuntao Jiu-Jitsu dojo, the
children and adult curriculum are similar, but also very different.
The adult curriculum is more intense, aggressive and covers more of
the reality of the street such as multiple attackers, gun defenses,
and knife attacks. To make the system of Kuntao Jiu-Jitsu suitable
for children, Soke-Dai Bochner adapted the adult curriculum and
tailored it to the needs of a younger student. Because a ten year
old child will not have the mental capacity or life experiences that
a 35-year old adult would, children need a gradual increase of
skill, while focusing on discipline, respect and control.
The main differences between the curriculums is that children have
different set techniques
and maneuvers such as an armbars, joint locks, and chokes are only
taught when a child is mentally and physically ready. The children’s
curriculum also emphasizes hard blocking techniques to develop the
concept of blocking in our youths. In the adult curriculum, more
emphasis is placed on open handed parry blocks to deflect and strike
simultaneously.
Natural Progression
As children increase in rank, the adult curriculum
is incorporated into the children’s curriculum. The completion of
the children’s curriculum (4 – 5 years) is equivalent to completion
of 50% of the adult curriculum.
